Metacore announced today the unfortunate plans to restructure their organization to better align with the core business Merge Mansion, improve efficiency of operations, and respond to an increasingly competitive market environment.

Since the launch of Merge Mansion in 2020, Metacore has grown significantly as a company, building the organization with the ambition to scale Merge Mansion further and launch new games. While Merge Mansion remains a strong and stable game with a loyal player base and a strong brand, its growth has plateaued over the past few years, and Metacore’s new games investments have not succeeded in launching new games globally.

As a result, Metacore plans to restructure its operations and focus on growing Merge Mansion.

In Finland, the company will initiate change negotiations. Metacore is also investigating what kind of changes there could be to operations in Germany and Sweden. If the plans are realized, Metacore would consider reducing up to 160 roles in Finland. The company is committed to supporting its employees throughout the process in line with local practices and regulations.

“These are very difficult discussions,” says Mika Tammenkoski, CEO of Metacore. “We have built an organization with growth ambitions that have not materialized as expected. The competition has become tougher every year since we launched Merge Mansion and created the merge 2 category as a pioneer. We need to make changes to remain competitive and to give Merge Mansion the best possible chance to succeed going forward.”

Despite the challenges, Metacore continues to believe strongly in the long-term potential of Merge Mansion and the merge 2 category, which is growing rapidly and attracting increasing competition. The genre is projected to surpass match-3 as the largest puzzle category in the near future.

As part of its next phase, Metacore is deepening its partnership with Supercell. Already the company’s major shareholder, Supercell is planning to bring Merge Mansion into its live game portfolio. To make that happen, Supercell plans to acquire the rest of Metacore.

"Metacore's team created the first ever game for the merge 2 category, and I have huge respect for them for that," says Ilkka Paananen, CEO of Supercell. “I believe Merge Mansion’s best days are still ahead – with Supercell’s experience in turning around and scaling global live games, alongside our capabilities in live operations and user acquisition, we can scale it back into a leading position in its category.”

“Making a turnaround after stalled growth will take hard work and new thinking. We trust that we can supercharge Merge Mansion together. I believe Supercell is the best future home for Merge Mansion,” Tammenkoski concludes.
